While many businesses are struggling in a tough economy, one local company is growing in a more unusual place.
Jamko Technical Solutions is expanding as more clients request its services.
It was an intimate crowd as Jamko Technical Solutions announced its newest addition.
"It's been a long road. One year ago, the actual founder of the company, Michael James, passed in a snowmobile accident," said Steve Mounnarat, Jamko president and CEO.
Mounnarat said the company that started less than 10 years ago has come a long way.
"At one point we didn't even think we were going to finish the building," Mounnarat said.
But they did finish the building and officially opened the doors to its global headquarters in Lyons, New York, helping power generation sites around the globe stay safe.
"Jamko is a full-service provider for the power generation industry. We make robots that crawl," Mounnarat said.
"These are all remotely driven and operated hundreds of feet away. They have multiple camera systems on them," said Frank Barilla, business development manager.
Jamko specializes in building robotic equipment that can be used inside high radiological areas – places people can't go.
The robotic crawlers look for foreign objects in steam generators to help reduce the chances of an accident and to check for integrity issues.
"The camera systems that are on there can zoom in so you can see much more detail with the use of the camera system than you can with your naked eye," Barilla explained.
With an energy bill set to change the way companies do business, Jamko says it's positioning itself to be an even bigger global contender.
"This building means quite a bit and I think we'll be able to draw customers, companies and all different elements from different parts of the world here to Lyons, New York," said Mounnarat.
