Adam Putz was arraigned Friday. He's charged with burglary, grand larceny and criminal mischief.

He's also charged with a number of other crimes police now say happened back at the police station after he was taken into custody.

Brighton High School students we spoke to say at first they didn't know why school was delayed Friday, and then canceled all together. They say they were disappointed about what happened.

"I was just wondering who would've done that and why in their right mind would do it to our school,” said Brianna Freeman, student.

Brighton Police say they were called to Brighton High between 5 and 6 a.m. Friday after alarms went off and staff called in. They found broken windows, and according to police reports filed in court, extensive damage to the school's scientific equipment.

"I saw a lot of glass. You folks at the scene probably saw a lot of glass on the outside of the school. There was a lot of glass on the inside as well,” said Chief Mark Henderson of the Brighton Police Department.

Police say they are looking at surveillance video from cameras in and around the school and say that evidence is part of the investigation. They would not say what exactly led them to the student, but police reports say some school staff members described seeing someone at the scene.

School leaders thought initially they'd be able to get the scene cleaned up in time for school, but police say there was so much damage and it was such a large crime scene to process, so they closed school all day.

"This was not a prank. This was a crime, a felony level crime with significant damage to the school."

Police reports say Putz stole a 2008 Chevy Impala. He's also charged with criminal tampering for stuffing a police station toilet with paper and causing it to overflow. He's charged with obstructing governmental administration and harassment for fighting and kicking officers while resisting arrest and criminal mischief for breaking an officer's wristwatch.

A judge entered a not guilty plea on his behalf. While Putz told the judge he was expecting to go to school on Monday, he was told he cannot be on school grounds.

"We are very proud of our facilities, and proud of the culture that our students and staff have developed in terms of caring for the facilities and school community,” said Kevin McGowan, superintendent of the Brighton School District. “We're very proud as are our students, so this is especially disappointing that this would happen and would allegedly happen with one of our own."

The judge set bail at $7,500 cash, $15,000 bond. He's due back in Brighton Town Court with an attorney next week.

School leaders say they are confident school will be open on Monday and safe for students. The school also will be open from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday for students and staff that need to pick up books or school work.
