Cuomo talks campaign finance reform

By: Zack Fink

Governor Cuomo says campaign finance reform is not high on the public's agenda, which is why it hasn't been tackled in Albany yet. It's one of many issues he touched on at a news conference. Zack Fink has the story.

NEW YORK STATE -- It's been nearly three weeks since Governor Cuomo spoke to reporters on the final day of the legislative session. The governor was asked about enacting campaign finance reform, something he once identified as a top priority. Cuomo suggested it will be hard to get done, in light of U.S. Supreme Court decisions.

"Citizens united. You may now be at a point where you can't limit the money," Cuomo said.

With every member of the legislature facing re-election this year, Cuomo has been asked repeatedly if he will help support Senate democrats who have sometimes been at odds with the popular governor.

"Those decisions won't be blanket decisions. They won't be I support every democrat, I support every republican, I support every independent. By definition, it’s a case by case individual determination," said Cuomo.

The World Trade Center Museum and Memorial has been held up by money shortfalls. Cuomo says he and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie are trying to find solutions for the Port Authority owned site, but he stopped short of calling on the U.S. Parks Service to take over, which is favored by some of the 9/11 families.

"We both agree that the federal government has a role to play. This is not a New York City memorial, this is not a New York State memorial, this is not a New York and New Jersey memorial. This is an American memorial," Cuomo said.

At a recent private reception, Cuomo’s father, the former governor, spoke about his son seeking the presidency.

"He was talking about his belief and his perception that I had done a good job in 18 months. That we had a good record of accomplishment. And that there was speculation I should run for president as evidencing that I've done a good job," the elder Cuomo said.

This was only the second time this year that Cuomo has spoken publicly about a possible presidential run. The governor doesn't seem to want to talk about it, which in some ways has helped propel the story.
