Jim Boeheim was named the national college basketball coach of the year by The Sporting News. Boeheim led 28-3 Syracuse to the regular season Big East title. The Orange were unranked at the season's start and picked to finish sixth in the conference.

Boeheim was also named the Big East coach of the year for the fourth time, tying Connecticut coach Jim Calhoun in that department.

The conference also named Syracuse forward Wesley Johnson as the player of the year. The Iowa State transfer led the team in scoring and rebounding. Johnson is the first Syracuse player of the year since Hakim Warrick won in 2005.
