How can the Bills be at this point? The organization poured well over $100 millon into a defensive unit that needed upgrades for 2012. It looked as though they had made them. Then came the games.

The Bills are at the bottom of the NFL in total defense, second only to New Orleans. And when Chris Kelsay met with the media Monday, he offered some insight into why that may be happening.

"Some way, some how, we've got to understand what accountability means across the board, playing hard every play," Kelsay said. "You watch the film and not everyone was playing hard every snap, and that's unacceptable."

Not everyone was playing hard? That's not something we've been accustomed to hearing from Kelsay over the last ten years. It was clear that frustration was coming to the surface.

"There's no excuse for it," he continued. "We put in way too much time and effort during the week. I thought we practiced really well throughout the week. But if you don't play on Sunday, if you can't translate to the game field, it's all for not."

So was Kelsay pointing the finger? Was he calling out Mario Williams? Or any other player directly on the defensive unit?

"No!" he said. "It's not Mario. It's not Marcell (Dareus). It's not Kyle (Williams). It's all of us, each and every one of us a different times throughout the game. . .I'm not singling out anybody. If I'm going to single somebody, I'm going to single myself out."

So what kind of reaction will this be causing in the Bills locker room? C.J. Spiller seemed to say that it's something he wouldn't do.

"I can't speak for everybody," the running back said. "I can only speak for myself. I know every time I put that uniform on and go out there on Sunday, I give it my max effort. I guess he can speak for everybody else, but pretty much I can only speak for myself."

Ryan Fitzpatrick was more understanding.

"What Chris is doing, and Chris is going to be the first one to point a finger at himself, he is challenging their unit as a whole," Fitzpatrick explained. "I think that is important. That is something you can do and it will resonate through the locker room."

Will it make a difference? We have to wait almost two weeks to find out.
