There's a national search underway at UB as athletic director Danny White prepares to select a new coach after firing Reggie Witherspoon.
Witherspoon invited the media to his home on Monday, surrounded by family, friends and players.
The move was surprising to him, because he was told before the season that a coaching change was not going to happen, but after the season, White informed him the decision was made back in December.
In 14 seasons, Witherspoon won 198 games - with four 20-win seasons and two trips to the MAC Title Game. He's especially proud to have taken the program from anonymity to a respectable level.
"What we have here in Western New York is good enough to attract people from all over the country. When I got to UB, people said. 'You're not going to be able to do that.' And in a short period of time, we were bringing people from Florida, and Arizona, and North Carolina," Witherspoon said.
This is Buffalo. This is a great place. It's got tremendous support, and we should never be ashamed of the fact that we're form Buffalo, because we have a great city. We have a great region."
