RIT has mixed science and technology, holding the first Hamfest hosted by the Rochester Amateur Radio Association.

The Hamfest is an opportunity for people to learn more about ham radio.

The event also gives people an opportunity to get together, buy and sell equipment and parts for their ham radios.

Ham radio allows people to communicate from all over the world, even during power outages.

When cell phone and Internet go down, ham radio plays a role in helping out during natural disasters.

Bill Marinucci, Vice President of the Rochester Amateur Radio Association said, "When all else fails, HAM radio is there, it can be used in national disasters when cell phone towers come down, when communications come down HAMs are able to provide vital information, also severe weather.

"We have through our skywarn program the ability to report to the weather bureau what we're seeing in the sky, whether it be funnel clouds or things like that, and helping out in national disasters," said Bill Marinucci.

This first time event at RIT was the 89th Annual Rochester Hamfest.
