Irondequoit Police returned to the scene of a fatal fire Wednesday to continuing searching for clues as to what started the blaze.

Early Sunday morning, Irondequoit firefighters were called to Falstaff Road to battle flames at a vacant home. After the fire was extinguished, they discovered the body of 31-year-old Rebecca Rodriquez Lopez.

Police say the mother of four died of smoke inhalation.

"So it's a very kind of close knit neighborhood," said resident Carrie Grinstead.

Grinstead has lived on Falstaff Road for fourteen years. She says in the middle of the night Sunday, she awoke to fire trucks and heavy smoke coming from her neighbor's house across the street.

"In the middle of the night you're always startled and then you're not sure of what's going on," she said.

Firefighters say they were called to the home for the report of a vacant house fire around 1 a.m. After attacking the blaze from outside the home, firefighters went inside and found who family believe was Lopez dead at the scene.

"The fire is still under investigation. The Monroe County Fire Bureau did respond. They assisted with the fire portion. And at this point in time, until we find out what caused the fire, we're going to rule it as suspicious," said Sgt. Mark Bean, Irondequoit Criminal Investigations Unit.

Lopez's father says Rebecca was his oldest daughter and the mother of four young children.
According to neighbors, she had not lived at the home for the last couple of months because the electricity was off, but would occasionally stop by for belongings.

"It's very sad. It's very upsetting because she is a young mom and it's a young family," said Grinstead.

Lopez's father says she had recently fallen on hard times. He also said Rebecca's children were living with their father, so they were not in the house with her.

"We all loved her. We worked with her. She had a great spirit. She had a good heart," said Jose Rodriguez, victim's father. "All of her younger siblings looked up to her and they are taking this very hard."
