Jenn Suhr pulled off an upset in London Monday, striking gold at the Olympics in women's pole vaulting.

Suhr's jump of 4.75 was enough to win a tiebreaker.

The gold for Suhr is the first for the U.S. in this sport since 2000, when women's pole vaulting debuted.

Back home in Fredonia, her parents Mark and Sue Stuczynski watched Suhr win the gold live through an online stream. They say watching their daughter win the gold was nervewracking.

"You definitly go through the steps with her. You feel all of the emotions. I'm not saying at the same caliber as her but you definitely feel it. You want it so bad for her. Seeing how hard she worked for it. It's just like any of your children you want to see them succeed at what they do, and this is the payback," said Mark Stuczynski.

Suhr's gold was the first for Team USA in women's track and field events in these Olympics.

"The more pressure, the better she usually does, so I'm excited to see what she does today,” said Mike Faro, Roberts Wesleyan’s athletic director.

The pressure was on, competing against a two-time Olympic champion from Russia and falling a little short in a few rounds.

But on a 15-foot, seven-inch vault, Suhr claimed the 2012 gold medal; defeating a Cuban athlete, who cleared the same height but lost on a tiebreaker.

"Knowing her so well there's a lot of pride in knowing she's a Roberts athlete, she comes back to the campus to visit a lot,” said Faro.

The college's viewing party even had a gold theme, as seen on the sundae toppings.

"We have been waiting for this for four years. I don't think there's ever been a college in the Rochester region represented twice in the Olympics by the same person,” said John Martin, Roberts Wesleyan College’s president.

Before heading to the Olympic stage it was on this track at Roberts Wesleyan College where Jenn first started to raise the bar for herself in pole vaulting, a sport she didn't like at first, a challenge that only made her more determined to master it.

“If you talk to Jenn she hated the pole vault, didn't want anything to do with it, kind of got talked into it. She's just an outstanding athlete that can do many sports,” Faro said.

Growing up in Fredonia, Suhr is an idol to local athletes.

"She is a humble and good person but she is a fierce competitor,” Martin said.

And members of her community who have followed her success.

"She took pictures, she took twenty pictures,” said Adam DeSantis.

DeSantis brought his eight-year-old granddaughter to the viewing party. They met Suhr at the Rochester Fitness Center.

"I brought my granddaughter one day and they were sitting in the aerobic room chatting about gymnastics. I think this is fantastic,” he said.

"I wanted to see the Olympics and her do it on TV. Just cool to watch... someone use a stick and jump over the bar,” said Elaina DeSantis of Churchville.

Suhr posted this comment on Facebook after being wrapped in the American flag as an Olympic Gold Medalist. "It was definitely something that I've wanted, I don't think I've ever wanted anything so bad."

Those fans pulling for her can't wait to welcome the gold medalist home.
