Ticket Sales for U.S. Women's Soccer Game Postponed

Fresh off their third straight gold medal win, U.S. Soccer and Sahlen's Stadium operators expected the U.S. Women's National Team's first post-Olympic match would be a hot ticket, but not this hot. YNN's Leah George joins us on scene from Oak Street with the latest on ticket sales for the upcoming Rochester match.

Tickets for the September first U.S. women's soccer match against Costa Rica were supposed to go on sale at Sahlen's Stadium Friday morning, but the extremely high demand for pre-sale tickets caused ticket sales to the general public to be postponed.

Earlier this week, Rhinos season-ticket holders, New York State West, and a handful of other organizations were given special codes to buy pre-sale tickets on Ticketmaster.com.

According to the Rochester Rhino's President, fan sharing of those codes led to 6,000 tickets sold in a 10 minute window.

By Wednesday, 11,000 tickets were sold.

The Rochester Rhino's are working with U.S. Soccer to identify additional seats for the match.

15,400 fans crammed into Sahlen's Stadium last year following the Women's World Cup.

"We’re trying to create some standing room only tickets. We’re also looking at pockets that they had on hold, whether they’re willing to release some of them based upon sponsors, based upon, like you heard Nike had some tickets that they gave out to clubs, so depending on what their sponsors say, may not be using them, some tickets may be released," said Pat Ercoli, Rochester Rhinos President.

For those unable to get a ticket there is still an opportunity to see some of the players. A free public practice session is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. August 31st at Sahlen's Stadium.

"I know there will be disappointment but we need to reflect on the fact that we have a special event coming to this community and it’s great to have it," said Ercoli.

There is no timetable yet on when the general public will be able to buy tickets to the match.
