Old Mill Fire Under Investigation
Fire investigators are trying to determine what started a fire at a century old mill in the City of Canandaigua. It happened around 6 p.m. Thursday on Niagara Street.

The City of Canandaigua fire department says a passerby saw smoke and called 911. When firefighters arrived, they found the back of the old mill on fire.

The place has been vacant for several years. The fire department says homelesss people are known to stay inside the building. No one was in there when firefighters arrived.

Five departments responded to help stop the fire from spreading to nearby homes.

"We wanted to keep it in the building, because if it broke through the building and took the whole structure, we would have had quite a problem on our hands. It is in much better shape that I thought it would be when I pulled up last night," said Chief Mark Marentette of the Canandaigua Fire Department.

Four firefighters were injured working the fire. The fire chief said their injuries are minor.
