A local teenager is combining charity with helping the environment.

Pittsford Sutherland High School freshman Alia Bajorek hosted the annual Cans for Kids Saturday.

The event collects empty bottles and cans to get the five cent return on recyclables.

That money goes to various charities around the area including the Ronald McDonald House, The Salvation Army and Hillside Children’s Center.

"People really weren't taking the five cents recyclable things seriously and she figured out she could make money for arts and education while also contributing to the environment," said Lori Bajorek.

This year Alia teamed up with the nonprofit, "ArtsROC" to collect the recyclables.

She's hoping to collect about five thousand dollars.
