The Thruway Authority has dropped a plan to raise tolls on trucks and other commercial vehicles.

Back in May, the Thruway Authority proposed a 45 percent toll hike on all vehicles with three or more axles.

The Authority's executive director says a series of job cuts, and other steps to cut spending, will eliminate the need for toll increase.

Governor Cuomo hopes dropping the proposed hike will help attract and retain companies.

"My position was a toll increase would be a last resort. I thought it would be counter productive," Cuomo said. "I understand the financial necessities but thought it would be counter productive from an economic development point of view."

The toll cost for trucks traveling from Buffalo to New York City is about $88. Under the proposal, that would have increased to $127.

Sandy Parker, president and CEO of the Rochester Business Alliance, is praising the decision not to raise Thruway tolls.

"If a 45% toll increase had been put in place, clearly our economy would not be open for business, so this is the right decision to make. It was good for Upstate, it's good that the Thruway Authority folks were able to find some cost savings. Everyone can find some cost savings in their budget," Parker said.

Parker says she's pleased to see the Governor trying to cut costs rather than burden tax payers with more fees.
