Even at a young age, Mike Chiapperini seemed destined to help people. He became a volunteer fire Fighter when he was teenager. And he continued to volunteer after he joined the police force.

"Mike's being was a like a shooting star. Shining brightly before us for just a short time," said Webster Police Chief Gerald Pickering.

Chiapperini, or "Chip" to so many of his friends, left a lasting impact on those he worked with.

"You are and will always be my mentor and my hero," said Anthony Galante at the service.

Those Chiapperini mentored were there to eulogize him. Webster Police Department Sergeant and West Webster Firefighter Dennis Kohlmeier was so grief-stricken, he needed a little help to get through it.

"I'm gonna miss having instant access to his advice," said Kohlmeier.

And while there were many tears, Chiapperini's brother in law Dane Erich urged the nationwide audience not to allow a random act of evil to stamp out so much good.

"In these days where perhaps the word hero is over used," started Erich. "Remember these names: Chiapperini, Kaczowka, Hofstetter and Scardino. These guys are the real deal."

One final honor for a life dedicated to helping others.

"Car 941. You're 10-7," said Pickering. "Your work is done here. Rest in peace, my friend."
