Dozens of cows died in a barn fire in Ontario County. It happened at a farm in Farmington around 1 a.m. Monday.

The Farmington Fire Department says a passerby saw smoke coming from the barn on Fox Road and called 911. He also alerted the family inside the home that their barn was on fire.

Firefighters say the two-story barn housed calves, hay, and farm equipment.

Several fire departments responded to help put the fire out. It took about an hour and a half to get the fire under control.

Thirty yearling heifers died in the fire.

"That's their livelihood, I mean that's quite a loss for them, but they're aware that the herd of cattle were lost and they're dealing things pretty well," said Assistant Chief Ken Ferg of the Farmington Fire Department.

No people were hurt.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
