A change for the worse: that's what residents in Ontario County heard about Tuesday at a town hall-style meeting about their county nursing home.

"My mother was the brunt of one of the problems on Christmas Day. She's a resident out there: last in line and they served her a hamburg," said Bryan Kransler, whose mother lives in a nursing home.

But much of what drives their argument, is anger.

"She told them where they could shove it," said Kransler.

Ontario County residents; worried for themselves, for their families.

"When a private enterprise takes over, they're there for a profit, so what ends up happening, in order to get that profit, you have to decrease what happens," said Flo Tripi, CSEA Western Region President.

Tripi says that means cuts in care and employees. She knows what people think when they hear that she's a union president, but she says:

"This is a very dangerous, very negative situation for any county to be in, and we're here tonight to really give the facts."

In an e-mail to YNN, county officials said simply: "The Ontario County Board of Supervisors has signed authorization to find an operator to purchase the Health Facility, like many others counties New York."

The reason is money. But for these residents, and even the nursing home's employees, it's about more than a paycheck.

"It's a love. It's just a love. It's like you take care of your grandmother every single day. They depend on us," said Diane McDermott, Ontario County Health Head Nurse.

The next step in this process is for the county's realtor to put the nursing home on the market for sale. The union says they know the interested buyers, and they're not optimistic about a future in private ownership for the home.
