First Responders Train for the Unthinkable at Conference

First responders throughout the state were trained on what to do if the unthinkable happened while responding to emergency calls.
Several different agencies got specific training on how to prepare, respond, and take care of family members if a colleague is killed while serving emergency roles.
The seminar, "Tradition, Honor, Respect to Fire, EMS, and Law Enforcement" was put on by emergency training and consulting firm CISM Perspectives. The all-day program was held at the Livingston County Training Center.
It covered topics like the leading causes of death, how to prepare for funerals, and dealing with grief after the event.
"As we train them, it's not if this is ever going to happen; it's when this is ever going to happen to your department. There's going to be an enormous difference between having a preplan and having a game plan versus having nothing at all and having to shoot from the hip," said Dan McGuire, president, CISM Perspectives.
The consulting company says the West Webster tragedy shines a light on the topic; however, the seminar had been planned for months.
