Local unions, including the Rochester and Genesee Valley Area Labor Federation, protested the $1.2 trillion dollars in spending cuts.
They held a press conference Wednesday calling on Congressional representatives to bring their frustrations to Congress.
Protesters say Congressional Republicans are taking the economy hostage and worry that these cuts will devastate local families.
James Bertolone, a union representative, said he is concerned about the effects the cuts will have on Social Security and physician shortages.
"They continue to threaten Medicare, Medicaid, working families, food stamps, workplace safety, education, everything except where the money is. Sequestration will cause another quarter where the economy shrinks, if it happens three quarters in a row we are officially in a recession," Bertolone said.
Congress has eight days to act before the sequestration takes effect.
