A group of students in the Gates-Chili School District donated hundreds of dollars worth of supplies to a program at Rochester General Hospital.

The 5th graders from the Walt Disney Elementary School donated more than $600 in supplies to the Child Life Program at the hospital. They said they got the idea following the Sandy Hook tragedy.

Officials from Rochester General were on hand to receive the supplies, which the entire school helped collect.

"Being at the hospital can be a frightening and confusing experience for a young child," said Teresa Schoell, childlife specialist. "It's a different environment and they may not know what to expect or what's expected of them. And in addition to preparing them, providing fun opportunities to play can really help make that difficult experience a lot easier."

The Child Life Program uses child development specialists to help children understand and cope with why they might be in the hospital.
