CORTLAND, N.Y. - The New York Jets are pleased with the progress they made during training camp at SUNY Cortland and are also pleased to be heading home after three long weeks of work.

Gang Green held its 16th and final workout in Cortland Thursday morning then packed up and left for their home base in Florham Park, N.J. While the practices were a grind the team members who spoke to the media afterward say it was still a great experience and thanked the campus workers, community, and fans who make it a smooth and fun experience.

CORTLAND, N.Y. -- The players may be gone, but Gang Green has left its mark on the City of Cortland.

"Stories are starting to float around about meeting up with players. Business owners will talk about players and coaches in their establishments," said Bob Haight, executive director of the Cortland County Chamber of Commerce. "You can feel the energy level in town has just been tremendous these past three weeks."

And once again, the unassuming city finds itself the center of national attention.

"I picked up a USA Today, there was Cortland prominently there," Haight said. "ESPN was doing daily updates because of the quarterback situation here with the Jets."

This year, the fan count over the three week training camp was a little under 36,000, down from 41,000 two years ago. And though an economic boost is certain, the single practice schedule may have affected spending.

"When there were two practices a day, our golf courses, for instance, would get people filling them up in between the practices. And we'll find out now from some of those types of businesses whether people stayed around for multiple practices or if they just came to town and returned home after," Haight said.

While local businesses welcomed the tens of thousands of visitors, the university is seeing the benefits of being in the limelight as well, with a record number of applicants hoping to get in this fall.

"We were just shy of 13,000 applications for 1,200 openings. So it's a very gifted class," said SUNY Cortland president Erik Bitterbaum. "We've become highly selective. It's wonderful for faculty to have these very gifted students to challenge them in the classroom. People want to come to a place like SUNY Cortland because they know they'll get a great education and everybody has the word 'Cortland' on their tongue. We're very lucky."

And while the school is celebrating a boost in status, those incoming students have something else on their minds.

"Everyone is curious," Bitterbaum said. "I know the big one will be where did Tim Tebow sleep?”

A secret administrators are happy to share.

In 2010, Jets camp brought about $6 million into the local economy. It will take about two months for this year's numbers to be tallied and released.

CORTLAND, N.Y. -- The Jets will hold a closed practice today and then it'll be back to Met Life Stadium, where they will take on the Giants on Saturday night in a preseason game.

Today will end the Jets’ stay in Cortland in 2012, but their presence here has done a lot for the area and given fans the chance to see their favorite players in action.

The Jets’ stay in the Crown City has also had a great impact on the local economy. As people came from outside the area to check out the team, hotels, restaurants, and stores all benefitted. The owner of one restaurant says his business picked up by about 20 percent since the Jets arrived.

Still, the Jets only practiced once each day here in Cortland, compared to mostly twice a day in 2010.

"People have come in. The players also. I just feel it would've been great if there was a second practice available. Because I think a lot more people would've stayed in town and come down Main Street and just check our stores out and everything. But overall it’s been a great experience," said Evan Souzas, The Community Restaurant owner.

The National Football League eliminated two-a-day practices for teams at training camp last year, and that's why the Jets could only practice once each day.

Economic officials are conducting surveys with businesses to be able to estimate the overall economic impact. In 2010, the three week camp helped attract more than 41,000 people to SUNY Cortland which had an economic impact of $5.8 million.

CORTLAND, N.Y. - Jets head coach Rex Ryan is known for his strong defenses and that side of the ball was the clear winner in practice on Wednesday with multiple interceptions of both Mark Sanchez and Tim Tebow.

The practice was the last one at SUNY Cortland open to the public. The team's final practice on the campus is Thursday morning.

CORTLAND, N.Y. -- As the final open practice at Jets camp concluded, a few thousand fans cheered while players walked off the field. After 10 open practices and the annual Green and White scrimmage, Jets fans had plenty of opportunities to check out the team over the past few weeks.

As for today's practice, fans watched the Jets go through a number of defensive and special teams drills.

Some people came from a few hours away and said it was important for them to see a practice before camp concluded. Fans say they've enjoyed everything about camp from the practices and a few fights, to the Jets Fest and merchandise.

Throughout camp, it's amazing how many fans said they were hoping to get autographs. For many, it was all about getting at least something signed by quarterback Tim Tebow.

CORTLAND, N.Y. -- The Jets will actually practice twice more in Cortland, but only today's session is open to the public. As Gang Green prepares for its next preseason game against the Giants this Saturday, Jets fans are encouraged to come and check out the team workout one final time today in Cortland.

Training camp will get its usual early start this morning beginning at 8 a.m. The Jets will practice for three hours until right around 11 a.m. The team shop and the Jet's Fest Fun Zone opens at 7 a.m. and will stay open until noon.

A few thousand people visited campus Tuesday as many fans enjoyed not only practice but the merchandise and fun zone as well.

With today being the last open practice, it's anticipated that a large crowd will be here again today.

Throughout training camp we've been seeing a number of youth groups and football teams make the visit together. Tuesday, we met up with members of the Cooperstown High School football team who say attending camp can help them learn the fundamentals of the game.

"It's definitely good to watch you know some of the professionals and you know some of the skills they're learning and techniques. That's where we're really going to you know learn. Because of course our plays are different but as far as technique that's important," said Kevin Segit, Cooperstown HS Senior.

A number of school groups have held day trips to the camp in the last few weeks.

CORTLAND, N.Y. -- About 1,000 fans came out to SUNY Cortland Tuesday morning for one of the last opportunities to see Gang Green play. The team seemed to be in high spirits as the first and second team’s offenses ran their red zone plays.

Fans say they’ve enjoyed the whole camp, from watching practices to hanging out in the fan zone. Tuesday was also high-profile quarterback Tim Tebow’s 25th birthday.

"Just in general it's fun to be here to see the whole process, just to see him. I mean I'm not a Jets fan, I'm a Tebow fan, so we're kind of following him around. It was actually my birthday a few days ago, and I tried to get up here so I could be here for my birthday, but I'd rather be here on his birthday, maybe that is some incentive for him to sign autographs if we're all chanting 'happy birthday'," said Jordan Fisher, a Tim Tebow fan.

And hopefully fans were able to get autographs, as the Jets have one more open-practice left on Wednesday morning.
